Do You Know If Your Food Is GMO Free?

When it comes to health, it’s important that we always do what we can to know what we’re putting into our bodies. Eating the right foods is vital, and one thing that has gotten a lot of attention over the last few years is GMO foods.

GMO, or genetically modified organisms, are any living thing that has been modified genetically in any way. Over time, nature can do this on its own through cross-pollination and other similar events. But man has sped up the process, and today genetically altering foods is commonplace.

But is it safe? There’s still not enough evidence to really say for sure, and early studies are suggesting that issues may exist. As such, eating non-GMO foods is a good idea. However, not everyone knows how to go about identifying whether or not their food is really GMO free. Here are a few tips that can help you figure this out.

  • Know The Labels – Look not just for organic, but for GMO free labels. The Department of Agriculture doesn’t test all products to verify that they’re GMO free. The only way to be sure is to only purchase foods that have the GMO Project Verified Seal.
  • Know The Crops – Two primary crops in the US are GMO: soy and corn. Almost any food based product on the market today that is derived from either of these will be GMO in some way. The only exception is the previously mentioned labeled foods – if you don’t see the label on these types of products, you can almost guarantee that GMOs are present.
  • Pay Attention – It’s worth touching back on the point above: corn and soy are used in a huge number of products today, from gum to cereal and beyond. Don’t assume that just because it doesn’t have corn in the name that it’s GMO free.
  • Eat Local – Often, eating local makes it easier to avoid GMOs. When you source your foods locally you’re able to speak directly to the person who grew the crops or raised the animals. This in turn translates to more control over what you’re eating and an easier time identifying whether or not you’re really getting something that is GMO free.

If you’ll keep these simple steps in mind you should be able to identify whether or not you’re eating or purchasing GMO foods. It’s worth understanding to help keep you safe.
